Logging off, locking and screensaver passwords

Close files and shut down your computer daily. It's worth spending the extra time to shut down your machine each day for these reasons:

  • Increases the security of your data and administrative systems
  • Protects your password
  • Conserves energy.

Although the convenience of keeping your computer open and unlocked might seem tempting, it introduces a security risk, by potentially exposing your username / password and locally stored files and allowing access to our administrative systems (Colleague, PowerFAIDS, etc.). If you must leave a computer, even if it's only for a few minutes--do yourself a favor and make sure that others cannot access it.

You can do this by (1) Logging off, (2) Locking (to your user account), or (3) Locking by using a screensaver password.

For PC users, if you need to leave your work area briefly, just hit WinKey+L (WinKey is the key with the Windows logo on it). You could also press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and then click the “Lock This Computer”. An-other way to lock your computer is to press the Start button and then “Shut Down / Lock”

For Mac users, select “Log Out” from the Apple Menu. This closes all applications and takes you back to the login window, preventing anyone from tampering with your files while you are gone.
